Tyler Dorsey
SG - 6’5, 183lbs - 22 years old - 1 year of experience
The idea behind Tyler Dorsey, his draft billing and his guaranteed contract is that he will be a good shooter at this level. To that end, the 36% from outside on a .521 three-point rate is a good start.
That said, even with Kent Bazemore out injured and Marco Belinelli bought out, Dorsey was benched in favour of Damion Lee. Dorsey was there as the Hawks brought in Lee, Morris, Cleveland and White around him. Dorsey was there as Malcolm Delaney pushed him out for reserve shooting guard minutes. And Dorsey lost these mini-battles simply because he never truly won his spot.
Dorsey shot catch-and-shoot three-pointers well all season, and Lord knows he was aggressive enough in taking them. That is however the only part of his game that flourished. The idea that he could be a secondary ball handler and playmaker looked some ways off, and whenever called upon to do anything inside the arc, Dorsey struggled. His pull-up two pointers were not efficient enough to be worthwhile, and he finished poorly at the rim.
Most worryingly, the offensive aggression he showed was purely offensive. Dorsey was too passive on defence as a rookie. Positioning and reaching errors are to be tolerated through inexperience, but lack of effort isn’t.
There were some signs of putting together more consistent all-around efforts during the free-for-all that was the end of the season. But Dorsey really needs a good summer. Having that guaranteed deal is the main thing giving him a future with the team - he has a lot of work to do.
Player Plan: One guaranteed season of minimum salary remaining. Needs to earn anything more beyond that.
